Rethinking Plastic Gallery
The Rethinking Plastic Gallery is a collection of products integrating circular and sustainable design principles that Searious Business has determined as best practice. This collection is intended to serve as inspiration for businesses who are seeking to design or rethink their products and improve their sustainability.
All products here have been chosen and classified based on our expertise, integrating Ellen Macarthur’s three principles of circular design: Design out waste and pollution, keep products and materials in use and regenerate natural systems. As Searious Business specialises in furniture, consumer electronics and packaging, there is a focus on these products.
Furniture
Developed to replace foam in the most demanding cushioning applications, Enkair is the result of a unique 3D-spinning technology. It features a pyramid-shaped filament structure that facilitates the manufacture of precision-engineered cushioning materials for a variety of end-uses. It is lightweight and fully recyclable, therefore the material of choice for advanced cushioning applications in our future circular economy.
Bettje is a child's bed made of only high-quality materials. The bed is leased on a monthly basis and can be returned when it’s done being used. After it’s returned, the parts are refurbished and if necessary, replaced and then delivered to the next user. All materials used can be reused at the end of their use or serve as raw material in the raw material cycle.
The Sett CE Sofa is made out of 95 % recycled materials, utilising plastic waste from their own production stream. Searious Business helped develop this sofa with Gispen. The base is 3D printed, making it easy to assemble and disassemble, as well as avoiding the use of glue. The body is made out of recycled plastic cupboard doors and can be re-used up to ten times without having to add new material. The seat and back of the sofa are made from recycled polyether foam.
vanPlestik has developed a 3D printer especially for plastics that normally end up landfilled or incinerated. In this way, plastic waste can be converted into valuable products, like the lounge chair. This particular chair is made out of 100 % recycled packaging materials.
The low-table is hand-made in the Netherlands, featuring a top surface in Polimarble®. Polimarble® is a new and innovative marble looking material made with plastic waste such as bags and bubble wraps and crafted by hand. Polimeer is a circular design studio focusing on the development of materials and designs with a strong aesthetic. The aim of Polimeer is to change people's negative perception on recycled plastics.
The Carrier makes transporting firewood or other belongings much easier. At the same time, it is a functional seat that provides extra storage underneath it. It is a space-saving piece of furniture that’s ideal for smaller spaces. The container is made out of ECOPIXEL, this circular material consists of at least 90% recycled plastic waste and it is endlessly recyclable.
DELTA stool was the very first project in the innovative ECOPIXEL material: ECOPIXEL is a new method for recycling plastics; is composed of 100% Low-Density Poly Ethylene (LDPE) that melts at 120°C and can, therefore, be re-melted an infinite number of times without altering its properties. As it melts in different shapes and colors, not mixing the pigments of the “raw” waste-material, it shows an easily recognizable pixelated appearance.
MarcelVanGalenDesign: Hollow Chair
MarcelvangalenDesign has been working on a seating element that has been fully optimized to be produced using the 3D printer. With this chair, 3D printing can be successfully used as an alternative production process for furniture. The chair is made entirely of recycled plastic and can be fully reused at the end of the life cycle.
This kid’s chair by ecoBirdy is made out of 100 % recycled plastics and is fully recyclable. It is made with ecothylene® : an innovative material developed by ecoBirdy.

Plasticiet creates materials from 100 % plastic waste that can be used for building materials for the future. This particular material is made out of old garden furniture and pig farm production waste.
Electronics
Every year, 15 million kilos of headphones are thrown away around the world. These parts still contain usable components and materials. Gerrard Street has developed a completely modular headphone with phenomenal sound, that can easily be repaired, or recycled.
Gomi Portable Chargers
Sustainable tech product, powered by repurposed waste batteries and handmade from ‘non-recyclable’ plastic waste. Gomi are also offering a free return service to ensure the chargers are fully recycled at the end of life. Gomi can simply remelt the plastic down to make new products from.

The casing of these watches are made out of 100 % recycled ABS plastic sourced from consumer products, and the wristband uses leather scrap from the shoe industry. They are designed for easy disassembly to facilitate repairs and and enable the reuse of components. Circular Clockworks will also buy the watches back for €15 to regain all parts.
Gomi works on transforming non-recyclable plastic waste into beautiful functional products. Their aim is to prove that waste can be desirable when processed and designed properly. The body is made out of flexible plastics like plastic bags and bubble wrap made out of LDPE which is not accepted for recycling in the UK.
Packaging
Outlander Materials: UnPlastic
Outlander Materials upcycles beer waste into UnPlastic, a functional, compostable, and totally plastic-free alternative to single use plastics. It’s edible, non-toxic, transparent and odourless.
A Top POP-UP CUP™ is a recyclable and renewable alternative to plastic and paper cups (plus lids) available in 12 and 16 ounces. Also possible as a substitute of plastic bottles. With real functional features.
A TOP Packaging: Snack tomato packaging
The tomato packaging is a durable 500 grams small pack made from 100% recycled and moisture-resistant Kraft paper with striking window pattern for maximum ventilation. This gives the packaging a natural, robust appearance. And after use they can just be recycled with the old paper. Also printable in full colour.
miscellaneous
Dick Moby produces sunglasses that utilise an oil-free, bio-based acetate, and made out of > 97 % recycled plastics.
The Greentom frames are made of post consumer waste and the fabric is made of recycled soft drink bottles (PET). The stroller is made out of 97 % recycled plastic. The mattress of the Carrycot is 100% natural: made of wool, flax and organic cotton.
Crafting Plastics! Studio: Nuatan
Using the patented Nonoilen® technology, NUATAN is made of 100% plant-based biopolymers Polylactic acid (PLA) and Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) produced out of plant-based resources such as corn starch, potato starch, used cooking among others. NUATAN is one of the first fully biobased and biodegradable materials that can be considered as a competitor to oil-based plastics in terms of properties and processability.
FREITAG is a Swiss brand that makes products out of used truck tarpaulins, discarded bicycle inner tubes and car seat belts.
elho makes plant pots and watering cans that are fully recyclable and made out of recycled materials. 70% of all the materials that they currently use are made from recycled plastic. Over the past year, they have incorporated almost 5,600,000 kilo of recycled plastic into their plant pots.
w.r.yuma 3D prints sunglasses where the frame is made out of 100 % locally recycled plastic from car dashboards, soda bottles and fridges. Each pair of sunglasses has a unique origin traceability code through which customers can discover the story behind their product and the materials used. Customers can swap their sunglasses for a new pair at a discount while the old product is used to 3D print new sunnies.
VerdraaidGoed supports changemakers who share their vision for a world without wastage. The NS-Upcycle project turns old timetables from the Dutch Railways into useful and surprising products, like notebooks, games, picture frames, serving trays, lampshades and more!
This skateboard by Wasteboards is produced in Amsterdam made of 100% recycled plastics, and wheels will be in the near future.
All Dopper bottles are produced in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. The bottles are BPA-free, and when a Dopper has fulfilled its lifetime (usually around 10 years), it can be handed in for recycling.The bottle is not made out of recycled plastics due to safety and hygienic reasons from the Food and Drug Administration.
