Dirk vander Kooij Dirk Vander Kooij is best known for his playful extrusions of reclaimed synthetics. He works frequently with recycled plastics, and in this particular design he uses plastic from discarded fridges. For this, he goes to a specialized company that recycles fridges. When discarded, fridges can be extremely harmful to the environment. By recycling the raw materials he avoids them having to be extracted from nature again and they can be used for new products. https://www.dirkvanderkooij.com/

Will Thompson: USE BY: 3018 "USE BY: 3018" is a project that aimed to demonstrate how simple and low-tech recycling plastic could be. The chair was created by melting down plastic waste with a portable electric oven and moulding blocks. These were then fixed together and finished with a robotic arm CNC, demonstrating the beauty and strength of a material that could be environmentally hazardous if not managed correctly. The project aimed to challenge our perception of waste and encourage others to adopt the process. https://willthompson.myportfolio.com/work

EMMA SICHER: FROM PEEL TO PEEL - AN EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN APPROACH TO PACKAGING The project proposes microbial cellulose as a suitable material for packaging and disposable tableware. Food is currently packed into materials which last forever or are damaging for the ecosystem. What if the container would follow the life-cycle of its content? Microbial cellulose is perfectly compostable and could be produced locally through the fermentation of SCOBYs and agri-food leftovers promoting a regenerative glocal perspective. https://frompeeltopeel.tumblr.com/

RICCARDO CENEDELLA & DANNY FERRARI : PLASTICENE What if we launch our life in a thousand years into the future and imagine to be archaeologists of the future; what will be our finds? We built a raw hoven press to make sheets of plastic, we use different colour of plastic in order to create a non-reproducible pattern which gives to the object a quality recognizable in the craftsmanship that makes it a more appreciable object. The result is a vase which represents the archetype of the archaeological findings of past cultures. The project is meant to sensitize the observer and make him think about what we are leaving in our planet and to help us to appreciate the qualities which make plastic so precious. https://riccardocenedella.wixsite.com/hello

STUDIO ROOS MEERMAN : AERA FABRICA The technique Aera Fabrica is a combination of blow moulding, glass blowing and 3D printing. From an experiment with stretching plastic, the studio moved to seeing the plastic form as a balloon that you can blow up. By heating up the balloon, it is made flexible and can be transformed. Cooling it, solidifies the form again. In contrast with the glassblowing technique, with the Aera Fabrica process, you determine the form before the inflating process, which allows us to more influence on the final form. Meerman uses PLA, a 100%-biodegradable material made from corn. http://roosmeerman.com/

INEKE HANS: CHOPS CHOPS from recycled plastic were originally designed for an installation in the garden pavillion of Dutch Royal Palace Soestdijk. The material proved to be extremely suitable for chopping meat, vegetables, cheeses etc. And although we are rare meat eaters the appearance of the red/white plastic sheets reminded so much of minced meat and the looks of salami, sausages and other types of meat that we could not withstand the idea of using it this way as chopping boards in the shape of chops, hams, bacon, sausages or steak. The recycled plastic is from the UK. A limited series of chops will be part of INEKEHANS COLLECTION till sold out. https://www.inekehans.com/
